Background and background effects
Put an image or looping video behind your card, give phones their own background, and add an effect like rain or snow.
Your background sits behind your card. On top of it you can add a moving effect, like rain or snow.
Add a background#
- In the dashboard, open Profile, then Background.
- Click Upload image or video and pick a file.
- Check the preview, then press Publish.
To change it, click Replace. To go back to your theme’s page colour, click Remove.

- Videos loop and start muted. MOV files from an iPhone or Mac need converting to MP4 first.
- Your background is dimmed slightly so your card stays readable.
- If you have no song, a background video plays its own sound once a visitor clicks your enter screen.
Use a different background on phones#
A wide picture often crops badly on a tall phone screen. To give phones their own:
- Switch the editor to Phone.
- The box is now called Phone background. Click Upload image or video.
- Press Publish.
The box shows a Phone only tag. Click Use desktop to make phones use your computer background again. See desktop and phone.
Add a background effect#
Under Background effect, click an effect. It moves over your background and under your card. Watch it in the preview.

Fireflies, Petals, Aurora, Warp Stars, Digital Rain, Retro Grid, Blaze, Glyph Rain and Grid can take your own colours: turn on Own colours under the effects and pick them. Aurora takes two colours and blends between them.
Film Grain and CRT work on any picture or video, and look best on one.
Effects that bend your background#
Ripple, Frost, Glitch, Blaze, Clouds, Glyph Rain, Grid, Cloth, Displacement, Asciify and Paint Canvas take your background picture or video and bend, freeze, burn or redraw it. Without a background they work on your page colour.

| Ripple | Water rings spread from your visitor’s mouse, plus one now and then on their own. |
| Frost | Ice covers the picture; the mouse melts a clear spot that slowly freezes over again. |
| Glitch | Every few seconds the picture tears into shifted slices with colour split, then snaps back. |
| Blaze | Fire, sparks and smoke rise from the bottom, and the heat bends the picture above. |
| Clouds | Fog drifts over the picture; the mouse blows it apart. |
| Glyph Rain | Falling characters light up the picture under them. |
| Grid | The picture becomes tiles that lift in waves around the mouse. |
| Cloth | The picture hangs like fabric in the wind; the mouse brushes waves across it. |
| Displacement | A fast mouse sweep shears the picture into offset tiles that settle back. |
| Asciify | The picture is drawn with text characters. Bright pictures work best. |
| Paint Canvas | The picture looks painted on canvas; the mouse leaves wet brush strokes that dry. |
Phones have no mouse, so there the effects that follow it mostly show their idle motion. These effects need a browser with WebGL2, which nearly all have; where it’s missing, the plain background shows.
Pick None for no effect. Premium effects have a Premium tag. You can try them in your preview; publishing them needs Premium.
Effects stay still for visitors who turned off animations. Effects can be different on phones too.
